MSC’s Southern Hemisphere Alpine Conference
Posted under: News from the field
Published 7 May 2019
The Mountain Safety Council is hosting its biennial Southern Hemisphere Alpine Conference (SHAC) in Christchurch next month. And it is talking about everything to do with avalanches.
Among the presenters sharing their expertise are Kevin Thompson, who will present on managing the risk on Milford Road (including avalanches), Anna Easthope, who will talk about how to get the most from Avalanche dog teams and Kevin Fogolin who will discuss implementing an Avalanche Risk Management Program in Japan.
But it’s not all avalanches. Kevin Boekholt takes a look at some of the common mistakes heliskiing guides make. And Dr Malin Zucha answers the question how many naked, normothermic people do you need in a sleeping bag to rewarm a hypothermic patient?
SHAC occurs every two years and is the only event of its kind in the southern hemisphere, bringing together snow safety professionals, commercial snow and alpine organisations, guiding companies and industry influencers for two days of collaboration.
