New trails finished in time for Christmas

Outdoorspeople in Wellington and Canterbury will have even more opportunity to enjoy the outdoors these holidays thanks to the completion of two new loop trails that received funding from the New Zealand Walking Access Commission's Enhanced Access Fund.

The Kohekohe Loop Track north of Wellington was officially opened to the public in September.

Not-for-profit organisation Nga Uruora received $13,250 to help with construction of the track, which opens up access to a large section of Paekakariki Hill from an entry point just south of Paekakariki.

New Zealand Walking Access Commission Chief Executive Mark Neeson said the track would be a significant asset to the community and was likely to prove popular because of the views it offered over the Kapiti Coast and Kapiti Island.

“It's a stunning track that takes walkers through native bush, including a beautiful stand of kohekohe trees. Its completion in such a short space of time is testament to the community support it received and the determination of the hardworking track builders, planners and volunteers who were involved.â€
