New walkways in the works
Published 1 August 2013
Keen walkers will soon be able to enjoy two new walkways providing access to scenic outdoor spots in the Marlborough Sounds and Canterbury.
The walkways, to be known as the Waitaria Bay Walkway and Hurunui Walkway, cross private land on easements granted by landholders.
The Waitaria Bay Walkway on the northern shore of Kenepuru Sound provides access to Bob's Knob Scenic Reserve from Kenepuru Road, while the Hurunui Walkway links with the Manuka Bay to Hurunui Coastal Track, south of Cheviot.
Commission Chief Executive Mark Neeson said the two walkways were notified in the Government's New Zealand Gazette in June.
“Some scrub clearance is still to be done and signage is yet to be installed, but the gazettal under the Walking Access Act 2008 is a significant step towards opening them up to the public.â€
