Khandallah Park Loop Track / Mount Kaukau Summit

Mount Kaukau offers panoramic views of Wellington's hills and harbour. Ona clear day you can see the South Island.

The route climbs up tracks and steps through the native bush. Towards the top you emerge onto farmland before descending the other side. 

The loop starts at Simla Crescent. It follows the Northern Walkway from Khandallah Park up to the picnic area on the summit of Mt Kaukau. At the top, you link onto the Skyline Walkway and descend a 4WD track to Sirsi Terrace. Along this track you will meet a sign for the Khandallah Swimming Pool pointing into the pines trees and down steps. You will come to a playground and parking area behind the pool on Woodmancote Road. Follow the walkway past the playground to Clark Street. There another sign will point you back to Simla Crescent.



The trail is a steep incline with many stairs and some farm stiles-not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs.


  • Picnic tables and benches on the summit.
  • No toilets or fresh water on the track.

Be prepared

  • Wellington weather changes quickly — bring clothing for all weather types.
  • Dogs must be on leads outside dog exercise areas. Please remember to clean up after your dog and dispose of the waste appropriately.

How to get here

Simla Crescent, the start of the trail is to reach from the Johnsonville trainline and the number 24, 25 and 26 Metlink buses. the Train takes about 15 minutes from Wellington. From the station it is a 4 minute walk to the Simla Crescent entrance. The bus takes about 25 minutes from the city to the Clutha Avenue bus stop. From there it is a 5 minute walk to Simla Crescent.
