Scenic trail developed with EAF support

Region: Wellington and Wairarapa

Location: Whareroa, Kapiti

Case Type:  Enhanced Access Fund

Date Closed: 02/11/2014

A scenic walking and horse riding trail was developed on Kapiti Coast’s Whareroa Farm Reserve, north of Wellington, enhancing recreational opportunities in the area and providing a link from Queen Elizabeth Park to tracks in the Akatarawa Forest.

The Whareroa Guardians Community Trust received $2,862 from the Commission’s Enhanced Access Fund to help develop the new 1.4km trail, dubbed the East Ridge Track. The trail provides a dedicated loop for horse riders and walkers, separating them from mountain bikers who have alternative tracks in the area.

The funding paid for trail signage and marking, while the Guardians Community Trust paid for tractor mowing and the Department of Conservation supported the work by upgrading their own signage in the area.

The new trail follows the ridgeline and provides great views over Paekakariki as well as the Kāpiti Coast and across to the South Island.

The trail was officially opened on 2 November 2014.
