Respect for property rights is important. So are the public rights of access over various forms of public land.
We have information about accessing the outdoors responsibly - including roads and walkways, rivers and lakes, and private land. We also have information on using our GIS maps, creating new access, private land and what to do when there is a dispute.

The law enables farmers to grant access to recreational visitors, as they have done for generations. They are still obliged to warn visitors of risks that they wouldn’t normally expect on a farm.

If a landholder is charging a fee for access, an activity that might have been purely recreational (e.g. access to a fishing spot) becomes a workplace activity.

Most landholders are happy to oblige yet sometimes they can be concerned about people requesting access for recreational purposes, especially when they are carrying firearms.

Landowners have a duty to warn authorised visitors of significant, work-related, out-of-the-ordinary hazards. The landowner is not liable for any injuries.

If you have recreationalists on your farm, such as trampers, cyclists or horse trekkers you need them to be aware of Mycoplasma bovis.

If you're crossing a farm you need to be aware of Mycoplasma Bovis. It does not pose any risk to you, but you can take some simple steps to stop it spreading.
