Vacancy: Regional Field Advisor | He Kaitohotohu-ā-Rohe for the Hawke's Bay and Gisborne

Contract role

The New Zealand Walking Access Commission - Ara Hīkoi Aotearoa, is the Crown entity that protects and improves public access to the outdoors for all people including walkers, mountain bikers, anglers, horse riders, landholders, and trail runners.

About the role

We are seeking an experienced person to be a regional field advisor | he kaitohotohu-ā-rohe for the Hawke's Bay and Gisborne | Te Matau-a-Māui me Te Tairāwhiti area. There is some flexibility on the area depending on the location of the successful candidate.

The position is a part-time (two days a week) contract role. 

The successful contractor will join a team of 12 regional field advisors throughout the country representing the commission and working at local and regional levels with tangata whenua, local government, landholders, recreation and trail groups, and the public. The field advisor's role is to facilitate, negotiate, retain and promote public access opportunities in their region and to promote the role of the commission.

The role requires the physical ability to visit and inspect places that are relevant to public access.

What we are looking for:

The commission is looking for people who demonstrate the following:

• knowledge and understanding of Tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori
• an understanding of land access and the related legal context
• an understanding of, and interest in, the peri-urban and rural environments
• credibility with tangata whenua, local government, landholders, government agencies, recreation and trail groups
• understanding, familiarity, or interest in GIS-based technology systems
• good computer skills including the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point
• proven negotiation and influencing skills, and
• is a clear thinker, writer, and communicator.

A priority for this position is communicating the objectives of the commission to the public. It will require communication and presentation skills, initiative and sound judgement.
