Outdoor Access Champions in Dunedin, Southland and Waikato

The Commission has presented three Outdoor Access Champion awards to groups building and maintaining spectacular local tracks in Omaui, Dunedin and the Waikato.

The Omaui Tracks Trust received an award for its work creating a new walking track in the Omaui Scenic Reserve in Southland. It provides Southlanders and visitors with a new outdoor experience to the top of Omaui Hill, with a fine view of Foveaux Strait and Bluff Harbour.

The Green Hut Track Group, received an award for the volunteering work its members have down for the last 20 years maintaining trails in Dunedin. Last year they carried out more than 2500 hours of track maintenance.

The Waikato River Trails Trust received an award for building a network of trails along the Waikato, with the aim of bringing visitors to the beautiful South Waikato. Over the last six years more than 420 volunteers have planted more than 100,000 native plants.

The awards recognise people and groups who have made significant and lasting contributions to public access to the outdoors in New Zealand, whether through securing new legal access, championing public rights of access, trail building, or contributing to an understanding of access rights and responsibilities.

In a few weeks, the Commission will open nominations for the 2019 round of awards. We encourage people to think about their local champions – both individuals and groups – and put forward a nomination for consideration.
