North Auckland trails need support

A stunning coastal adventure trail is coming to Tāmaki Makaurau. The trail will span from Puhoi to Mangawhai and connect numerous north Auckland towns via public access trails.

The Matakana Coast Trail Trust (MCTT) is planning a trail for walkers and cyclists that provides the opportunity for locals and visitors to experience the beauty in Auckland’s fastest-growing region. But the project needs community support.

MCTT is asking for public submissions for the Climate Action Targeted Rate (CATR) to secure $13.7 million for the project. $13.7 million will launch Stage 1, which includes the construction of 24km of new cycleway connecting Matakana, Warkworth and Snells Beach. This will deliver many environmental, recreational and economic benefits and provide a greener opportunity for commuters, tourists and the wider Auckland community.

$13.7 million has been set aside to support Stage 1 trail construction as part of the CATR. However, there is a risk these funds could be diverted to other projects.

Anyone can show their support for this initiative by filling a submission towards the implementation of the Action Targeted Rate, as part of Auckland Council’s 2022-2023 Budget. This will ensure the trail secures funding and work can get underway for Stage 1.

The development of Puhoi to Mangawhai will happen in 3 stages and span 117 kilometres at a total cost of $50 million.

Submissions close on 28 March. If you'd like to make a submission, please send it directly to Auckland Council.
