Bullock Creek Hatchery Springs Walkway gazetted

A new walking track in Wanaka will bring people up close to the homes of native fish and birds.

The new Bullock Creek Hatchery Springs Walkway in Wanaka opened late last year and has now been officially gazetted.

It is only 300 metres long but it in time, it will be a fantastic urban sanctuary providing habitat for fish, birds and other native species.

The board-walked track is wheelchair and pram accessible. It links two urban streets along the Bullock Creek.

The Walking Access Commission’s Regional Field Advisor Ange van der Laan says the creek is fed by several “tinkling wee springs meandering off the slope” above the walkway.

As the area develops people on the track will be able to see fish, birds and other native species along the way. Ange van der Laan says the track is likely to be very well frequented.

Otago Fish and Game Council, which own the land, will maintain the track. The Commission has supported its development with funding to pay for some legal costs.
